Serving Up Community in Tompkins Square Park

by Kareem Rashed

Alan Good decided his community needed something to congregate around, something like a ping pong table. Good, a longtime resident of the East Village and founder of Henge Inc., installed one of his company’s concrete ping pong tables in the middle of Tompkins Square park. The table serves as a sporting activity, art installation and, perhaps most importantly, a conversation starter.

As Good said, “We’re all in the business of absorbing stuff that we don’t know from people around us, that’s part of what the table and the company are about, you set something up and you watch what happens.”
